Housing Future Plans
The goal at UC Merced is to house 50% of the student population on campus. In order to meet this target, the campus must provide 5,000 beds by the time it reaches 10,000 students. In anticipating a housing demand that serves a range of ages, levels and housing
preferences, the plan provides a mix of residential options and associated amenities to accommodate student needs. The Long Range Development Plan is the guiding document in planning for UC Merced's future housing needs. The plan contemplates dedicating approximatley 195 acres in meeting the campus housing goals. Currently within Phase 1 development of the campus, serveral housing structures currently exist, including the Sierra and Valley Terrace communities.

In addition to the residential structures developed in this area, several proposed housing projects are planned for development, including the Housing Three structure, slated to open in the Fall of 2010. In addition to the development of housing within Phase 1, the remaining land within the 814 acre campus will include Student Neighborhoods surrounding the academic core. These student enclaves will offer pedestrian access to the heart of the campus and provide 24-hour amenities to those seeking a temporay break from the academic rigor of campus life. These neighborhoods include residence halls and apartments supported by student services, dining, recreation, parks and open spaces, and parking. The campus’ neighborhoods are designed to facilitate face-to-face interaction which is a vital component in community development.
