Application Process for Continuing Students
Current first-year residents eligible to renew their Housing contract returning for a second year are considered priority (group 2). All other continuing students will automatically be placed on the waitlist and offered a housing contract when a bed space becomes available.
Applications details on the page apply for both on-campus residence halls and the off-campus Heritage apartments master leased by the University.
Make your Plan
In preparation for the housing application renewal period, explore your housing options and get familiar with the process. Decide where you want to live next year, and with whom do you want to live with? Do you favor a particular building, room, or Heritage apartments; or would you rather move off campus and sign a lease with some friends in the Bellevue neighborhood? Take some time to map out a plan, and involve a parent or family member in your decision making. If you are unsure about living on-campus next year, be aware that the housing renewal application is free and you can cancel through April 30 without penalty.
Apply for Priority
For PRIORITY consideration, apply to renew your housing application between March 13 and March 15. The application is FREE, takes only five minutes to complete. Everyone who applies by the deadline will go into the housing lottery for the eligible pool of continuing student bed spaces, and late applicants will go on the waitlist.
MARCH 13 at 9:00 a.m. – MARCH 15 at 11:59 p.m.
Step 1: Create Account
The first step is applying for housing next year will be to create an account on the MyHousing Portal. You will enter your UC Merced ID and Student ID Number (100xxxxx). Within a few minutes, you should receive an email containing a link. Clicking on that link will take you to a screen to confirm your UC Merced email and enter a password.
Step 2: Submit Housing Application

Once you submit your housing renewal application, you and up to 3 friends can request to be roommates. If you want to be proactive about your roommate situation but you do not have someone in mind, you may search for a compatible roommate through our secure MyHousing portal. Residents living in the Heritage apartments may select roommates of any gender. If roommates are not selected, residents will be assigned roommates of the same gender.

Check your Lottery Status
Immediately following the housing priority renewal application period, renewal applicants will be randomly selected for the eligible pool, and the remaining applicants will go on the waitlist in the order drawn. If one member of a roommate group is drawn in the lottery, all eligible* members of the group become eligible. Likewise, roommate pairs on the waitlist will be ranked consecutively so they stay together when they advance off the waitlist. Lottery results will be posted by the end of the business day. *Roommates must be current residents returning for a second year.
ROOM SELECTION: Students log into the room selection system and proceed to select a room. Only one roommate in a group needs to select a room.
After selecting a room, students will sign their housing contract and pay the $300 reservation fee. Students who do not select a room will be assigned based on their roommate or application preferences.
APRIL 3 – APRIL 30
WAITLIST: Students on the waitlist are not guaranteed housing until they advance off the waitlist and secure a room. Follow your waitlist status attentively and check your student email daily. If you are away from Internet access for more than three consecutive days, recruit a friend to manage your renewal for you. When you are notified of eligibility, you must respond by a given deadline or your renewal application will be cancelled.
