Winter Break Housing Information and Sign up

Campus residents are prohibited from accessing their housing assignments effective 10am, Saturday, December 21st through 10am, Sunday, January 19th, 2020, without a winter intersession reservation. This includes access to Valley Terraces suites. Building access will not resume until 10am, Sunday, January 19th. Any person needing to stay on campus during this period must create a reservation.

Students in need of housing during the winter intersession should select the "Winter Housing Reservations" button on the housing portal. (Winter intersession is from 10am, Saturday, December 21st, 2019 through 10am, Sunday, January 19th, 2020)

CREATE RESERVATIONS ON THE PORTAL

The cost for Winter Housing is $65 per night, including meals. Meals will be available in the Pavilion when it is open and as pre-packaged meals when closed.

Residents may select any number of days for housing, but all winter intersession requests must be submitted through the housing portal by the deadline of 11:59pm, December 13th, 2019. Residents can directly modify or cancel reservations until 11:59pm on December 20th, 2019. After December 20th, winter intersession charges will be added as a housing charge to their student bill are not refundable without written approval from housing.

The total cost of your Winter Housing stay will be billed to your student account and due on the January 15th payment deadline.

Reservation Options

  • If you plan to stay the entire winter break, you would create one new reservation, between 12/21/2019 and 1/19/20.
  • If you plan to stay for the beginning of winter session and then return closer to spring opening, you must create two reservations. For example: 12/21/19-12/23/19 and 1/14/20 - 1/19/20.

Living on campus during Intersession

Winter intersession is a time of significant campus maintenance. Residents considering intersession housing should be advised that maintenance staff may enter student rooms, fire & life safety systems will be tested during daytime hours, and there may interruptions in electrical service while work is completed. Every effort will be made to communicate these to residents by email as they are determined, but notice may be limited

Glacier Point & Granite Pass:

Glacier Point

  • December 26-27, 30; Jan 2-3, 6-10
    • Possibility of no heating for 6-8 hours per day for HVAC maintenance
    • Maintenance staff accessing rooms to check fain coil
    • Audible fire alarms throughout building (testing) during business day
    • Maintenance staff accessing rooms to test fire damper

Granite Pass

  • December 26-27, 30; Jan 2-3, 6-10
    • Possibility of no heating for 6-8 hours per day for HVAC maintenance
    • Maintenance staff accessing rooms to check fain coil
    • Audible fire alarms throughout building (testing) during business day
    • Maintenance staff accessing rooms to test fire damper
    • Possibility of not hot water for 2-3 hours in a day (Jan 2-3, only)

Sierra Terraces

  • December 26: Not Hot Water, 7am-3pm

Valley Terraces

  • December 30: Not Hot Water, 7am-3pm, Tulare & Madera
  • January 2, 2020: Not Hot Water, 7am-3pm, Stanislaus & Kern
  • January 3: Not Hot Water, 7am-3pm, Kings & Fresno
  • January 6: Not Hot Water, 7am-3pm, San Joaquin & Calaveras
  • January 7: Not Hot Water, 7am-3pm, Merced

The Summits

  • January 8-January 10th: HVAC, not anticipated to affect occupants

Dining on campus during Intersession

Winter intersession meal service is limited to boxed or pre-prepared meals between December 22nd and January 1st.

Between January 2nd and January 19th, meals will be served at the Pavilion from 9am-7pm.

Students reserving winter intersession with dates between December 22nd and January 1st will receive a survey in early December asking them to indicate which meals they anticipate eating while on campus. This is to help reduce food waste and to clarify any dietary restrictions.

Transportation during Intersession

Cat Tracks will not be running and there will be no public transportation options to and from campus. Campus ZipCars will be available, but require a valid driver’s license and a membership card that must be obtained in advance.

Desk and Mail Services during Intersession

The housing office will have limited hours during the break. Between Monday, December 23rd and Tuesday, January 12th, the housing office will be open from 4pm-8pm. Students who order packages should be aware package processing and availability will be limited by this schedule. After-hours assistance will be available through the RA on call for the community and University Police. The desk will resume normal hours, 10am-10pm, on Wednesday, January 13th.

Campus Employment

Students who need to stay or return to campus early for work or program participation should apply for winter intersession housing for the needed dates. Campus departments may pay the Housing office directly. Students should verify how early housing costs will be paid with their employer or program prior to applying for winter intersession housing. In the absence of departmental funds, the requesting student will be accountable for winter intersession costs.

Students will be charged the nightly rate based on their selected intersession housing dates. These costs will be added as a housing charge to their student bill, are not refundable without prior approval, and must be paid before the spring semester payment deadline.

By submitting a winter intersession reservation, you are agreeing to abide by all Housing & Residence Life policies during winter recess housing.
