Leadership and Service Living Learning Community

The Leadership and Service Living Learning Community is open to first-year students who are willing to commit themselves to exploring and developing their own leadership skills and style, understanding their personal values, and learning how to ethically and effectively engage with and in the local community. Personal engagement on a weekly basis is expected.

The year kicks-off with a fall retreat. Participants will get to experience the Central Valley through one Valley Adventure and Service trips each semester and will participate in weekly community service placement. Additionally, students are highly encouraged to enroll in the Leadership & Service section of USTU-10, a one-credit college preparation course offered in fall 2020.

The Leadership and Service LLC is a partnership between the Community Engagement Center, the Margo F. Souza Student Leadership Center, and the Center for Career and Professional Advancement. The Leadership and Service LLC is also supported by the Office of Residence Education.

Program Requirements for the First-Year Experience

  • Participants must be first-year students at UC Merced.
  • Students must participate in retreats and weekly LLC meetings on Monday evenings. Only two absences are allowed each semester.
  • Participants must commit to one semester-long community engagement placement each semester.
  • Students must attend one of three Valley Adventure and Service Day trips each semester.
  • Participants must be in good academic and student conduct standing throughout the duration of the experience.
  • Students are encouraged, but not required, to enrolle in USTU-10, a one credit college preperation course offered in fall 2020.

All first-year students who complete the full year of the Leadership & Service LLC are eligible to participate in the second-year experience of the Leadership & Service LLC.

Year Two of the Leadership and Service Living Learning Community

All first-year students who complete the full year of the Leadership and Service LLC are eligible to participate in the second-year experience of the Leadership and Service LLC. During the second-year experience, students will be introduced to the services of the Center for Career and Professional Advancement (CCPA) at UC Merced. Students will be provided support in creating a Career-Readiness Action Plan to utilize during the remainder of their time at UC Merced. Students will continue to participate in leadership development workshops, as well as engage in the community.

Program Requirements for the Second-Year Experience

  • This experience is open to all students who have completed the first-year experience of the Leadership and Service LLC.
  • Students must participate in monthly LLC workshops.
  • Students must particpate in a minimum of two community engagemetn projects or placements each sememester.
  • Participants must complete a Career-Readiness Action Plan.
  • Students must particpate in at least one form of campus engagement outside of the LLC. This engagement can include activities like a campus job, internship, or student organization.
  • Participants must be in good academic and student conduct standing throughout the duration of the experience.
