What to Bring

Students moving in

 

Greetings incoming residents! We are excited about your upcoming arrival to UC Merced Housing and Residence Education, and we want to help make your transition to college as smooth and comfortable as possible. To help ensure that you have what you need in your residence hall and make it feel like home, we have put together a list of what to bring and what to leave at home. Download the PDF.

Each room is carpeted, comes with window coverings, tag boards and wastebaskets. Furniture for each student in an undergraduate room includes a desk (30” tall x 45” wide x 24” deep), three-position chair (32.5” tall x 20” wide x 22.5” deep), solid maple bed (36” tall x 83” long x 40” wide) and two solid maple stackable underbed storage units (16” tall x 31” wide x 24” deep). Triple and quad units have combinations of bunked and lofted beds. UC Merced provides Wi-Fi to all residents at no additional cost.

 

What To Bring
 
  • XL Twin Bedding
    • Sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blankets, comforter
      • Information on the bed frame provided is available here. The provided mattress measures 38 inches wide by 80 inches long by 8 inches deep.
  • Bathroom Supplies & Toiletries
    • Towels, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, lotions, prescribed medications, shower caddy, shower shoes, mirror
  • Power Supplies
    • Power stripe with surge protector and heavy duty single plug extension cords (UL)
  • TV and Internet Cables
    • Cords for cable TV and Internet hookups
  • Laundry Supplies
    • Laundry bag/basket and laundry detergent
  • Emergency Supplies
    • Thermometer, medications
    • Flashlight, battery, radio, first aid kit, two or three face covers, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, disposable gloves, etc.
  • Study/Desk Lamp
    • LED lamps are preferred. Halogen lamps are not recommended
  • Pad Locks (Combo or Key)
    • Locks for desk drawers, bikes, bathroom lockers
  • U-Lock (for bikes)
    • If you bring a bike
  • Microfridge and/or microwave
    • For fire safety reasons, only one Energy Star rated microfridge no larger than 4.2 cu. ft or....
    • One Energy Star rated microwave oven per room and....
    • No more than one Energy Star rated compact refrigerator not to exceed 4.2 cu. ft. for every two people assigned to the room. (1 in single or double; 2 in triple or quad)

Minimize the amount of cardboard boxes or other disposable packing items you plan to throw away

Use Energy Star appliances

Use LED light bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs

Reduce the items you buy! Wait to purchase items until you know they're necessary.

What You Should Leave At Home
 
  • Pets
    • Only fish in 10 gallon tanks or smaller are permitted
  • Weapons
    • Guns, stun guns, tasers, air guns, nunchucks, etc.
  • Kitchen Appliances
    • Rice cooker, coffee pot, hot water pot, crock pots, toasters, electric grill, etc.
  • Flammable Items
    • Gas cans, etc.
  • Illegal Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia
    • Including prescription drugs not prescribed to you
  • Alcohol
    • If you are under 21 years of age
  • Candles, Incense, Space Heaters, Sun Lamps, BBQ grills, etc.
  • Wi-Fi Extenders, Wi-Fi Routers and Wi-Fi Printers (only allowed if Wi-Fi is turned off).
